How is LASIK performed?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n
LASIK is a two-step procedure which requires the surgeon to first create an ultra-thin sliver or corneal flap on the surface of the eye, which is then lifted to expose the underlying tissue, allowing the Excimer laser to reshape the eye to correct the refractive error.<\/p>\n
The LASIK surface flap is created using the Wavelight FS200 laser<\/strong>. As the Wavelight FS200 laser is directed across the eye, it creates a microscopic layer of bubbles at a specific depth just beneath the corneal surface. The flap is then lifted by separating the tissue where the bubbles have formed.<\/p>\n
The exposed underlying tissue is then re-shaped by the Wavelight EX500 Excimer laser<\/strong> with an accuracy of 0.25 micron (1\/4000th\u00a0<\/sup> of a millimeter) to match your individual focus and the flap is re-positioned in place.\u00a0 The flap moulds to the new shape and this changes its surface contour, instantly changing your vision to the new, more normal focus.<\/p>\n
With the cornea\u2019s extraordinary natural bonding ability, healing is rapid. The flap acts as its own \u201cband aid\u201d and becomes adherent within a few minutes without stitches. This gives the eye extra protection, reduces potential post-operative discomfort, minimises the risk of infection and accelerates the healing process. Patients can see clearly almost immediately after the operation.<\/p>\n
